As I’m sure other people did, I dreamed of this about 7 years ago and I’m amazed it’s taken this long to become real.
It’s the only defense — tho an important one — for the insanely regulated, tightly controlled ecosystem on iOS, wherein Apple checks every single piece of software to make sure it’s not, e.g., quietly mapping your apartment.
If you’ve ever tried to move something through that ecosystem, you know the pain. But getting your life mapped out on an anonymous server is a different kind of pain, and maybe this particular tradeoff is worth it.

“Newly released malware PlaceRaider sounds like science fiction: It’s Android malware designed to build 3-D models of users’ apartments for burglars and assassins. But PlaceRaider—developed by a team at Indiana University—is very real. The new malware was built as an academic exercise, and it exposes security flaws that government agencies would love to use. More importantly, it also exposes unintended mobile functionality that large companies like Google could easily monetize.”
