I went with @triciawang to Public Storage today to confront the detritus of 10 years of stuff thrown hastily into storage years ago. I felt a bit weird about how much stuff I had socked away in there but we managed to throw out a lot. But what really made me feel better was that just as we were leaving, we stumbled onto the once-monthly storage auction, wherein delinquent tenants have their stuff auctioned off to a crowd of strangers. These men - they are all men — bid with only a view of the unit to go on, equipped with stepladders and flashlights to get a better view. What’s in these units made me feel much better about what’s in my own. This one, which went for $5, was filled 10x10x12 with Dole Bananas boxes, each one of which was filled with newspapers from around 2002. Or were they? Tricia and I passed, so we will never know. #storagewars #heavyweightofobjects
